What to do when you hit a facility
Regardless of what type of facility is struck – or how badly you think it is hit – STOP digging. Then notify your supervisor and the facility owner. Report even small scrapes or nicks. The facility owner can easily do a repair when the point of damage is exposed.

Don’t attempt to make repairs on your own and don’t be hesitant about informing the facility. They’d rather see it now than 3 months from now when somebody has a problem.

Online emergency contact information for members is available online to members and ITE users or you can call 811.

If you strike a gas line and hear a hissing, whistling or roaring sound - or smell rotten eggs - shut down the equipment, clear the area and call 911 or the fire department from a safe distance away. Tell emergency services what you know about the situation. Next, call your supervisor and the facility owners. Avoid starting any engines. Engine ignition can cause gas to ignite. Be careful of other ignition sources too. Static from nylon jackets can ignite the gas. So can cigarettes, lighters, electrical switches, cell phones, pagers, cameras and metal tools.
