April named Call Before You Dig Month
April 2006 marks the beginning of Call Before You Dig Month, the time when SSOCOF launches its annual awareness campaign to make homeowners and excavators aware of the law. SSOCOF will be running television and radio sponsorships throughout the month as well as distributing its news release to contractor and general publications. SSOCOF's damage prevention staff is also planning on running advertising throughout the year and continues its billboard campaign on Florida's busy roadways.

As we all know, damage prevention is not just a one-month concern. In Florida, digging occurs all year long. SOCOF also relies on its members and those who have a desire to help further damage prevention efforts throughout Florida to spread the word about call before you dig. If you'd like to help, click here for more information. We look forward to partnering with you!

DIRT data promises to develop targeted education
The Common Ground Alliance's (CGA) Damage Information Reporting Tool (DIRT) and SSOCOF urge all Florida damage prevention stakeholders to use DIRT for nationwide and local damage prevention efforts. The goal of DIRT is to reduce damages to underground facilities and their associated costs, reduce the number of personal injuries and deaths, and prevent vital service outages.

Simply put, DIRT will help answer some tough questions many have been trying to answer for years – questions like, “How many damages occur to underground facilities each year? What are the primary causes of these damages? What is the annual cost of excavators failing to provide proper one call notification and owner/operators failing to respond to notifications properly? Are some of SSOCOF’s educational campaigns more effective than others? Are damages increasing or decreasing?” Click here for the whole story.
